Who are ARSCP?

Human economic and social activities have a big effect on the balance of nature. Our planet's natural resources are becoming increasingly depleted, climate is changing and temperatures have risen by about 0.8 C since before the Industrial Revolution. Africa and islands are the most vulnerable areas. Drinking water is decreasing, hurricanes are increasing and poverty is on the rise.  As our desire to consume more goods and services rises by each day, humanity’s biggest challenge becomes how to protect the planet from destruction and at the same time ensuring economic growth and survival of future generations. This requires changing our production and consumption patterns towards sustainable consumption and production (SCP). This responsibility lies in our hands and the choices that we make today will have a bearing on future generations.Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is about using ‘’more and better with less’’ by reducing resource use, degradation and pollution along the lifecycle of goods and services, while increasing the quality of life for all.

A key goal is decoupling economic growth and environmental degradation by increasing the efficiency of resource use in the production, distribution and use of products. This way energy, material and pollution intensity of all production and consumption functions can be contained within the carrying capacities of natural ecosystems. SCP is a win-win tool which when applied benefits the environment and the economy.
The African Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ARSCP) is an international (African) NGO which promotes sustainable consumption and production concepts in the region of Africa. We work on implementation of the 10YFP on SCP as well as organizing meetings and bi annual regional roundtable meetings where knowledge on good SCP practices, new initiatives, projects, programmes, projects and activities on SCP is shared. We conduct capacity building, trainings for government and business people and also publish half yearly newsletter and journal on SCP development in Africa.
So far we are the largest SCP network in Africa. Join us to work towards a better World today which ensures survival of future generations. Welcome.
